Performance of municipal waste stabilization ponds in the Saharan desert (Morocco)

Abstract The majority of cities in the Saharan territory south Morocco utilize waste stabilization ponds (WSPs) for municipal wastewater treatment because their relatively low capital, operational costs, and minimal complexity. New national effluent quality regulations have been implemented Morocco, they will be applied to all systems. In this study, we chose three that are located area characterized by an arid climate water scarcity. They facing challenges rapid urbanization need improve management. Treatment performance is impacted community use, pond design, climate. evaluation concerns seven physicochemical parameters during year 2020. Monitoring results showed WSPs can achieve removal rates between 75% 85% organic pollution total suspended matter, but were challenged produce meets reuse standards. Performance statistical analysis done confirm existence correlations these region. For improvement waters, it legitimate upgrade with a tertiary maturation ponds.
